Total Alkalinity Levels

Total Alkalinity (TA) is a measure of the pool water's ability to neutralize acid. In other words, it measures the concentration of alkaline substances in the water that can buffer the water's pH and prevent sudden changes in pH levels.

The ideal range for TA in a swimming pool is between 80 and 120 parts per million (ppm). 

Low Total Alkalinity

If the TA is too low, the pH level of the water can become unstable and fluctuate rapidly, leading to corrosion of metal pool equipment and irritation of eyes and skin of swimmers. 

High Total Alkalinity

If the TA is too high, the water can become cloudy and cause scaling on pool surfaces. High TA also makes it harder to affect your pH with adjustments.

Adjusting Total Alkalinity


To adjust the TA level, pool owners can add specific chemicals like sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, or alkalinity increasers. If the TA level is too high, a pH decreaser can be used to bring the TA level down to the desired range. It is important to test the TA level of the pool water monthly and make adjustments as necessary to maintain a stable pH level and ensure comfortable and safe swimming conditions.
